Tweens are at an exciting stage where they’re beginning to explore their own style and develop self-care routines. A tween is generally classed as being ages between 9-12 years old, although I have an 8-year-old daughter and I would say she is fully at the Tween stage! With the rise of social media influencers getting younger and talking about topics such as beauty and skincare, it's no wonder we are starting to see younger children showing more interest and adding skincare and makeup to their birthday and Christmas lists. If you are the parent of a tween it’s important to ensure that these new experiences are safe, age-appropriate, and fun. Here are ten beauty tips tailored just for tweens:

1. Keep Skincare Simple

Tweens’ skin is often sensitive, so it’s best to stick to the basics. A gentle cleanser, a lightweight moisturizer, and sunscreen with at least SPF 30 are all they need to keep their skin healthy. Using products with two many ingredients can irritate children's skin, which can lead to skin conditions like acne. If you notice any skin irritation it's important to cut back on the products you are using or even stop using them completely to keep skin healthy in the long run.

2. Start with Lip Balm

Lipbalms are a really easy introduction to make up and they can also be quite fun. Lots of children's character brands have ranges of lipbalms that come in fun packaging and my daughter has a variety of ones you can clip onto things like a bag so they don't get lost. If your child wants something a bit more like mummy uses, look at brands like Vaseline who have a variety of flavoured and tinted lip balms that are easy on the skin. Tinted lip balms are a great alternative to full on lipsticks.

3. Nail Art Fun

Non-toxic nail polishes in vibrant colors or nail stickers are a fantastic way for tweens to express themselves. Plus, it’s a great activity for a parent-child bonding session. My daughter loves doing my nails and is actually getting pretty good at it now. If you like having rainbow nails this is definitely the activity for you :)

4. Learn Sun Safety

Teach them the importance of protecting their skin with sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses. Sunscreen is one of the first thing I have spoken about with my daughter and I always make sure I look at products that have sun protection in. You can make this more fun by choosing fruity-scented sunscreens or colorful sun hats. There are also some really cute kids sunglasses in your local supermarket that you can pick up for a reasonable price.

5. Explore Hairstyles

Experimenting with different hairstyles can be a fun way to express individuality. Try braids, buns, or hair accessories like clips and headbands. Avoid heat styling to keep their hair healthy. There are some really good tutorials on social media platform, so you can choose some ideas and try them out together. One thing my daughter also loves is hair gems, these are really easy to use and add some extra sparkle.

6. Embrace Natural Beauty

Encourage tweens to celebrate their natural features. If they are really keen to start using some products try some clear mascara or a little bit of blusher.

7. Introduce Scented Body Sprays

There is now a huge range of perfumes aimed at children, which can be great and they also make great gifts. Some of these perfumes contain heavy ingredients which can irritate sensitive skin, so it is a good idea to look at starting out with body mists instead. We have found some great body mists in our local supermarket that come in really pretty packaging and have some lovely smelling scents.

8. Make Cleansing a Habit

My daughter has only dabbled with makeup for events like her school disco and a gymnastics show, but I have tried drumming into her the importance of taking it off again at night. Putting makeup on is great fun, but it is equally important for them to learn how to cleanse their face to remove dirt and oil. As your tween ages, encouraging them to start a daily cleansing routine is a great way to build healthy skin habits for the future.

9. Focus on Healthy Skin

Hydration is key! Encourage drinking water and eating skin-friendly foods like fruits and vegetables to maintain a natural glow. This might seem a bit boring to your child who is desperate to experiment with some sparkly eye shadow, but explaining that skincare isn't just about what you put on the outside should build a healthy attitude and habits that will benefit them hugely as they grow up.

10. Have Fun with Temporary Tattoos or Hair Chalk

Temporary tattoos or colorful hair chalks are safe ways for tweens to experiment with their look without any long-term commitment.

By keeping beauty routines simple and fun, tweens can enjoy exploring their style while learning to care for themselves responsibly. Remember, the goal is to boost their confidence and encourage self-expression in a healthy and safe way!
